Flip the main breaker
If something is sparking or smells hot, kill power at the main breaker first. It's the big one, top of the panel.
Unplug nothing by hand if hot
A hot plug or cord can burn or arc. Leave it. The breaker does the disconnecting safely.
Keep water away
Never touch electrical anything with wet hands or from a wet floor. Water waits until we've made it safe.
